Many anglers who fish in rivers and streams, do so by standing or walking along the bank or by wearing a pair of waders and wading into the water that they are fishing. While these methods are obviously all effective ways to fish, what many of these same anglers never consider is that by using a small fishing boat, they can access otherwise inaccessible water and often take the fishing experience to a whole new level.
The cool thing about small fishing boats is that they aren't that expensive either, ranging in price from a couple of hundred bucks to a little over a thousand for a real "bad boy" that will last a lifetime. Below I will outline a few of the best boats for fishing small bodies of water so that you can make a determination as to whether or not a small boat is a good idea for you and your favorite type of fishing.
  1. Paddleski Catamaran Kayak - This unique watercraft is a sort of kayak/catamaran hybrid and is extremely versatile, maneuverable, and easy to fish from. The catamaran/kayak features two widely spaced inflatable tubes that cut right through the water but give you a solid, well balanced boat. Whether you are dealing with a river or a lake this moderately priced boat is hard for serious anglers to beat.

  2. Frameless Pontoon Boat - You are probably unfamiliar with this unique boat, but when it comes to small fishing boats the Frameless Pontoon might be as good as it gets for a single fisherman. It can be easily rowed forwards and backwards, stood up in for casting and retrieving, and can even have a small motor attached to it if you so choose. This one man fishing boat is practical in almost any kind of fishing. Best of all, because there are no parts to assemble, this 9' boat packs easily in a car trunk and sets up in just 5 minutes.

  3. The Float Tube - Most anglers have heard of float tubes, and if you are fishing in a small lake or pond, float tubes can be a great boat choice. Of all of the watercraft being outlined, float tubes are the least expensive and thus the most popular small fishing boat choice for many anglers. If you are dealing with a small budget or like to fish remote lakes a float tube might very well be the choice for you.
The bottom line is that small fishing boats come in many shapes and sizes but the aforementioned choices are among the best for fishing small bodies of water. If you love to fish and have never considered adding a boat to your repertoire, you may want to sooner rather than later.
