There are many reasons to take up new hobbies, but one of the most rewarding aspects of a new activity is simply getting to relax and unwind. A good hobby can be a brilliant way to recover after a tough day at work and should be perfect for taking your mind off of your woes. Of course not every hobby is 'relaxing' in the typical sense and if you're someone who loves martial arts then you'll probably find you spend a lot of the time less relaxed than you started out.
If you want to take up a new hobby for relaxation purposes and have something you can do whenever you're feeling tired or need a break, then consider some of the following suggestions...
Fishing
Fishing is a brilliant way to pass the time and is even more effective for relaxing thanks to the fact that it's something you enjoy outdoors. If you like the sounds of sitting back in the sun feeling a cool breeze on your face while you wait for a fish to pull, then this is certainly something to give a go. Like any good hobby though it's also one that you can improve at and that provides a great sense of achievement.
Reading
Reading has to be one of the most relaxing hobbies of all. Sure, when you're really tired you may find it tricky to concentrate on a book without drifting off, but the rest of the time this is an excellent way to recoup after a tough day. What makes reading even more useful though for relaxation is the fact that it requires the use of your internal monologue. In other words, when you're reading you'll be sounding out the words in your head and this means you won't be able to think anything else - you won't be able to think about work or about rent coming out at the end of the month, you'll have to give yourself a break.
Drawing/Painting
Something else that can really get you involved and have an almost meditative effect is drawing or painting. This way you can take your mind off of the troubles of the day as you immerse yourself in adding fine detail to your illustrations and as you visualise your next line in your mind's eye. It's amazing how quickly time can pass when you're drawing, so it's great for unwinding.
Yoga
While yoga is a great way to tone your body and increase flexibility, there is also a meditative aspect and you will spend a good amount of time lying with your eyes closed as you control your breathing. What's great about yoga is that it won't only help you relax at the time, but it will also help you to relax more easily when you need to in daily life.
Playing an Instrument
When I was younger I asked my Dad why he played the piano and he answered that it was great company. I didn't understand at the time, but now that I play myself I do - whatever mood you're in, the piano is a great way to express yourself and to let it out, and this can be fantastic catharsis.
