There are plenty in every region so whether you're staying in Auckland or in Invercargill there should be something to suit.
North Island
Auckland
The largest city in the country also offers access to some of the best fishing in the country. The whole region features some top spots to cast your line, but special mention should be given to fishing in the Hauraki Gulf. Booking a boat charter for the day will let you immerse yourself in a luxurious and exciting fishing experience. There's no better place to be for game fishing and you're almost certain to snag a big snapper heading to the outer edges of the gulf. Book a charter and head out to Great Barrier Island for a beautiful day on the water.
Hawke's Bay
Hawke's Bay's rivers and lakes are ideal places for trout fishing and offer some of the country's best angling. Head to the Tukituki River where you'll find a number of brown and rainbow trout. Access is usually pretty good, even by 2WD, so you shouldn't have any trouble getting there from nearby Napier and Hastings. The Mohaka River, 50 minutes north of Napier by the highway, is also a top spot for trout.
South Island
Marlborough and Nelson
It's known all around the world for its wine, but a stay in Marlborough and nearby Nelson affords plenty of opportunities to cast your line. The Motueka River, found near its namesake town in the Tasman District, is perfect from the very start of the season in October while Lake Rotora offers striking vistas to compliment a great day fishing for trout.
West Coast
The West Coast of the South Island is known for being rugged and rural. The Arnold River, just 15 kilometres from Greymouth where it joins the Grey River, has a high population of average sized brown trout. Marked points guide the way and it's one of the best places in the country to try some fly-fishing.
Land the big one anywhere in New Zealand. Head to some of these top fishing locations for the experience of a lifetime and enjoy your stay in the country with a rod in your hand.
