Leatherman Multitools

The worst feeling in the world is having a pocket full of individual tools, but not the right tool for the job on hand. This is the idea behind Leatherman Multitools. It's one unit, but it's full of various different tools, so you'll always have what you need no matter what. Multipurpose tools is generally judged by a few different criteria.

Number of Tools

Mulitools like those from Leatherman can have a variety of different number of tools in the single unit. This can be anywhere between 5 and 18 or 19 or more. The cost of each tool will vary as well based on the number in most cases. If there's only 5 or so different tools inside of a multipurpose tool than it will generally only cost around twenty dollars. Multipurpose tools that have a huge number of different tools can cost as much as close to two hundred dollars or more. Generally, these will each be called by a different name. For example, if something has the most number of tools, it might be called "Heavy-Duty." If a tool is more mid-ranged they might say "full-size." The "pocket-size" and "keychain" varieties are self-explanatory.

Types of Tools

A multitool can have any combination of tools. The most common are wire cutters, knives, and bottle openers, mostly because these fit the easiest into a tool and people will tend to need them the most, they will also often have scissors, which can be useful in a wide number of areas as well. Scissors can be used to cut fabric, or string, or a variety of other soft materials, after all. Pliers tend to be useful in multiple situations as well.

Other tools that you might get that are more unique could be a mini saw, or a file. It's nice to have a saw because you never know when you'll need to cut through something that's a bit tougher and that doesn't really respond very well to scissors.

Uses when Outdoors

Some tools are particular suited for using outdoors on camping trips. Tools that have saws can be useful for cutting branches, for example. This is something you might have to do in order to make a fire in the woods. The scissors on good outdoor multipurpose tools should also be able to cut through just about anything, especially if it doesn't have a saw. Many will have bevelled edges that make it easier for you to get really close to what you're cutting. The files will also often be diamond-coated, especially on Leatherman varieties so you can get really detailed work. Tools like the cutting hook are surprisingly useful when you're going outdoors as well.

Materials

Generally they should be made of stainless steel, because anything else will mean that they could erode in time and these tools should be built to last since if any part of the tool becomes rusted or broken down it can hurt the usability of the whole gadget. That's why it pays to actually look at the label on the tool and make sure that it's true stainless steel, since some cheaper brands might try to skimp on this. The handle part of the tool will often be made of something like hard-anodized aluminium alloy. Black oxide is a metal coating that is powder-based, and specifically for stealth operations such as in the military. It doesn't gleam at all in light. This won't generally be important for casual use, but it can be when it comes to military applications, which is one reason why a lot of people purchase these tools.
