All the bass fishing old-timers love seeing new people come to the sport, and it's a type of camaraderie that exists in other sports and it's a fun thing to be part of. When you're talking to more experienced people, they'll teach you a lot of things. What you'll discover is there is a certain type of kinship among fisherman. If you're new, don't be in a rush to buy the latest and greatest, though, and take your time and find out what's best.

You can try to bass fish everywhere in the US and never get to all the locations. If you're in colder areas, then you'll be restricted to certain species like the black spotted bass, but that's all right because they're a great bass to hunt. What you may want to do is try fishing for the different kinds, and then you can decide if you like one or the other. You can hardly get too much information and knowledge about bass fishing, and with that here are some sound tips.

Fish are smart to begin with since nature did give them ways to protect themselves.

When it comes to olfactory perfection, or their ability to smell, bass fish and large mouth are terrific in that department. Bass, like all fish, will smell the bait before they take it, so it cannot be smelling like Old Spice. So avoid having unusual odors on your hands when you go out fishing for large mouth. The lateral line of nerves on their body allows them to hear even though it's not considered an ear. Not all bait is treated or used in the same fashion, and shad is one of those instances where this applies. For instance, casting toward shore from a boat or standing in the water has been known to work well, and what you want to do is closely imitate how the fish naturally swim. From the time your bait hits the water, you'll need to let it go to the proper depth and then work your magic. Vary how you do this and what you're looking for is finding the right speed, and you'll know when you get it right because you'll start getting some bites.

Another point about bass is they can watch you on the side of the water if it's clear enough. So this means that fishing in cloudy or foggy conditions can work to your advantage, and there are other factors to consider such as the water temperature. The opposite condition is cold water, and the effect of that is generally improved eyesight or ability to see. These are just a few of the considerations you'll want to think about with the weather and bass.

Just like all other forms of fishing, you have to make decisions about what kind of tackle to use. Stay within your budget if you're new so you don't end up spending needlessly and wasting your money - be patient about it. Prices are all over the place, and many times it's the difference between buying brand name or not. But, that does not mean you should buy at the opposite end where quality can be very questionable.

If you want to refine your bass fishing game, then learn about rods as they are different. The point about rods is they're made of all kinds of various materials, and each one will make it a bit different. A stiff rod will give you a hook set that is much quicker, but the trade-off here is that stiffer rods are less sensitive which makes sense. So each decision will drive you in certain directions and this is what will change how you fish. The most knowledgeable bass fisherman will be the older fisherman who have been around the block many times. Just be sure you don't get bogged down in learning mode because you need to get out and use it. And as you go along, just pick and choose what you like and what you know to be most applicable to your area and what you're fishing for.
