Many fishermen fail to realize how important the moon is to whether or not they have a successful day on the water. The truth is that they often never even consider such things, but the truth is that they should, because the moon has a much more significant affect in whether or not fish will be biting than most people ever realize. Below I will provide a basic outline of how the moon affects fish activity so that you can use this information to help you catch more fish on your next fishing excursion.
This subject is much like the study of quantum physics, you can go as deep as you feel comfortable, but the basics are usually enough to get you through. The first thing to consider in regards to the moon and fish activity is that the phase that the moon is in is of the utmost importance. Most monthly calendars show the phase of the moon on one or more of the individual days as it changes approximately every thirty days. The two phases that fishermen want to focus on are the full and the new moon phases.
When the moon is a new moon the fishing in usually much more productive as fish activity is at it's highest during this phase of the moon. When the moon is a full moon the fishing is usually more productive than during waxing and waning crescent phases, but mostly during low light periods (such as dawn and dusk) due to fish feeding more heavily at night during full moon periods. The bottom line is that if you can concentrate your fishing efforts on these two moon phases and periods of time, you will experience more success when fishing.
The next way the moon affects fish activity has to due with when the moon rises and sets. What you didn't realize that the moon rises and sets? Well it does, and the hour or two period of time that brackets the moon either rising or setting is almost always productive time to fish. If you use just one way to determine how the moon affects fish activity the moon rising and/or setting the moon rise and set is it.
However, your goal as a fisherman should be to have as many of these factors in your favor as possible anytime that you head out fishing. This way you will know that the fish that you are attempting to catch are most likely to be active, and thus actively feeding. These are the basics of how the moon affects fish activity and if you start using this simple information to your advantage on the water, you will begin to experience more success when you head out fishing.
