Spring is a great time of year to be catfish fishing. The temperatures and warming and the fish are getting active. You move from a winter where you must be in the right spot at the right time to a time where any and everywhere could be great. This is also the time of year that everyone is coming out of hiding. We start to see guys getting back to the river after a winter of hunting. So how do we target these spring catfish.
The first thing that I want you to think about is the normal catfish movement during the spring. Catfish move from their winter holes to spawning locations. In winter, the biggest catfish will be in deep holes in down river sections of the river. As the water warms, you will notice that catfish begin to move toward shallower upriver sections of the river. The rising water that typically comes with the spring rains gives catfish the chance to use holes that they couldn't normally use. Which means they will have access to food sources that they didn't before. This movement also leads catfish to their spawning locations.
But the first concern for a catfish coming out of winter is to feed heavily for the spawn. This means also means that catfish will move a lot in search of the most food. So to be clear, you should be looking around shallower areas upriver. You will be targeting active catfish and covering a lot of water since catfish will be moving a lot.
If we aren't fishing many holes in a days time, we might never find the schools of catfish that are feeding. When I say that catfish move a lot, studies have shown that catfish will move over 80 miles during this time of year.
Catfish seem to know a large section of the river. This could mean that you can fish the same areas year in a year out in order to catch catfish.
Using techniques such as drift fishing and bounding down are great search methods to catch catfish. I wouldn't waste a minute fishing with slow techniques until I finally catch something. You might check 10 areas before you find a good one and then you might catch a dozen fish in a row. Or you could catch fish at every stop. As long as you are targeting active catfish, you'll consistently catch fish in spring.
Cat fishing is a great way to enjoy your free time and catch large fish. If you are interested in learning more about Large Catfish, you can visit http://www.HowToCatfishToday.com.
