Some of my best Walleye fishing has come on an overcast rainy day. Walleye hunt by using their hearing, by sensing movement, and by scent. So on a rainy day they are more likely to strike on a lure that provides movement and makes noise as it goes through the water. If you can add scent it will make it even more lethal to the Walleye.
My favorite lures are floating Rapalas in colors like tiger stripe, yellow, or gray shad. They seem to work best in the river I do most of my Walleye fishing. Other lures I use are Hot Craws, Jigs, and sometimes I use Night Crawlers or other Live Baits. Each will work great on a rainy day.
I fish from a bridge letting my lure out into the current slowly till I get enough line out, then with a slow jerking movement I reel in my line. When I get a strike I set the hook by pulling the rod tip back. With live bait I use a slip sinker rig with a floating jig head hook. I cast out in the river letting the sinker sink to the bottom, I tighten the line, and then open the bail on my reel. How do you know you got a bite? You can use a line holder that trips when a fish hits or you can watch for your line being stripped off the reel. When either happens let the fish run until no more line goes out, then you need to slowly reel up the line until you feel weight, and that is when you set the hook.
I not sure why the Walleye hit more on a rainy day, it could be because things they naturally eat are being washed into the river by the rain causing a feeding frenzy. It could be because of lower light levels because of the cloud cover. I just know that if you want a big Walleye to hit you got better chance when it is raining. I have caught hundreds of Walleyes in the rain using the fishing techniques I explained above. I also have caught other fish like Catfish, Sturgeon, and Bass when it was pouring rain. So next time it is raining go fishing. Just put on a rain jacket first unless you do not mind getting wet. Fishing in the rain is fun if you like catching lots of fish in a short amount of time.
