If you are a trout fisherman, and prefer to fish for these beautiful fish with spinning gear (specifically ultra light spin fishing gear as I do), you are probably aware of the fact that the type of bait that you choose to use is of the utmost importance, which is where this article will be able to help you out. In it I will draw upon my twenty five plus year of experience fishing for the most popular species of freshwater trout the rainbow trout, to explain how to catch more trout by utilizing the correct type trout fishing bait.
Seeing as how the most effective bait will vary from situation to situation, I think the best way to accomplish our goal is to outline the most effective fishing bait choices when it comes to fishing for rainbow trout so that you can make sure that you have access to one or all of them the next time that you head out in search of "rainbows".
Fishing Worms - Now it's no secret that fishing worms are an effective bait for fishing, but when it comes to rainbow trout that reside in the flowing waters of a river or stream, fishing worms can be an extremely effective trout fishing bait. This is especially true when the fishing worm is rigged naturally on a set of gang hooks while"drift fishing". When you think of using fishing worms for bait most people automatically assume that you mean live worms, but the truth is that synthetic fishing worms such as Berkley trout worms or Gulp "alive" worms can be just as effective for rainbow trout as their live counterparts.
Artificial Flies - If you know anything at all about rainbow trout you know that they love to eat insects (heck, the entire style of fishing known as fly fishing was created because of this fact), but what you may not be aware of is that artificial flies can be used as bait by spin fishermen as well by utilizing something called a casting bubble. With the help of a casting bubble (and some patience in the beginning) artificial flies can be utilized as trout fishing bait quite effectively by those of us who prefer traditional spin fishing gear.
Powerbait - Although the use of Powerbait is frowned upon by many trout fishing purists, there is little doubt that rainbow trout (especially trout that have been "planted") will bite this trout fishing bait quite readily. The key to using Powerbait effectively is to use a very small fishing hook. If using single salmon egg or bait holder hooks a size #10 or #12 is in order and if using a treble hook a size #12 or even #18 is the way to go. Keep your balls of Powerbait small and you will receive more bites from hungry rainbow trout.
If you want to know how to catch more trout (and you obviously do because you read this article) make sure that you have access to one or all of the aforementioned trout fishing baits the next time that you hit the water in search of this beautiful and hard fighting species of fish.
