I am going to tell you in this article, and I will keep it simple for your benefit, about how to be good at plastic worm fishing. So many anglers do not understand this subject and I am going to help you with that now. After this article you will have a solid foundation on fishing with the best known lure to us fisherman and women. You should want to learn this because fish love worms more than any other bait and you will catch more and bigger fish!
The Texas rig is by far the most popular. It is totally weedless. Cast it into and around cover like weed lines and pull it through clusters of stumps. It does not matter how deep you fish it.
For the Carolina rig, which was kept secret for years by tournament anglers where it got started, you use a swivel to do two things:
1. Is to stop your bullet sinker from sliding up and down your line
2. To change line weight for picky fish. For example, your line to the swivel is 12 pound, and from your swivel to the worm 8 pound. This rig is for "hard to catch" fish situations like cold fronts and heavy fishing pressure.
The wacky worm rig is a must to plastic worm fishing. It is simply a worm hooked through the middle of the body. For weight stick a nail in the head of the worm. To retrieve under this condition, twitch the worm, then stop and go reeling, then twitch and go again. It is best fished at a depth of 8 feet or less. Cast it under docks, boathouses, and other similar places.
One other rig is the jig and plastic worm rig (known as the pig 'n jig). Simply cast it to the edge of a weed line, or the edge of a bunch of stumps and hang on!
So we have talked about the Texas rig, that is totally snag resistant, and the Carolina rig that is excellent for hard to fish circumstances and the ever popular jig worm, and the great wacky worm. I say great because like the Carolina it is great for hard to fish situations. If you can have at least two of these rigs set up at the same time, like a jig worm for the edge of the weed line and a Texas rig for just inside the weed line for the less active fish, you have a basic starting point to be productive at plastic worm fishing. You will also have a shot at catching the biggest fish in any body of water using the plastic worm.
