When it comes to finding Bass I never, and I mean never pass up a good old reed bed. Reeds are Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass magnets! A good quality reed bed has me bursting with excitement especially when they are in 3 to 6 feet of water.

Smallmouth bass are a very hearty species of fish and are found in almost every type of water that there is, and one of the most enjoyable places to fish for and catch these beautiful fish is in the flowing waters of a river. Smallmouth love the current that rivers provide, as the current of a river creates many seams and places to hide to ambush their prey. One of the most effective ways to fish for smallmouth bass in a river is by wading in the water that you are fishing, in much the same way that a fly fisherman wades and fishes for trout.

No matter where you fish for smallmouth bass the fall is probably the best season of the year for catching not only numbers of bass, but trophy sized smallmouth bass as well. One of the main keys to fall smallmouth bass fishing is that the baits that are effective will vary from the other seasons. The most effective smallmouth baits in seasons such as the spring and summer mimic crayfish in some way shape or form, but during the fall crayfish patters will be much less effective that at these other times. Why is this the case? Because on most bodies of water, as the water temperatures drop (which obviously happens during the fall) so do crayfish populations and thus crayfish patterns aren't as effective as they are during the spring and summer.

Lake Erie once thought to be a dead sea is now alive and well and teaming with big small mouth bass, walleye, perch, steelhead and musky. I have been fishing Lake Erie for over 55 years and guiding for 35 and have seen an amazing transformation, much like Lazarus's resurrection from the dead. Here are a couple of reason how this took place.

Bass fishing from docks provides an easy yet interesting fishing experience. While some people may think that you can't catch any good fish from shore that is hardly the situation. Bass are found in many areas of lakes and ponds and tend to hide in the shadows of weedy areas near shorelines and docks.
