Getting started fly fishing can be an expensive and time consuming pastime. I suggest trying it with friends or perhaps for a session on a river or lake if you can find someone to take you, to find out if it is for you. This way you do not end up with unwanted or unnecessary tackle. If you can do this and enjoy the experience which is usually what happens then now consider getting some decent instruction both in casting and in actually learning how to catch fish.

Now consider the fly fishing that you are likely to be doing which will perhaps be dictated by where you live and the rivers or lakes nearby or perhaps by the budget you have available for fishing. Here in the UK the top chalk streams and salmon rivers can be very expensive. However whatever fly fishing discipline you take up do have some decent instruction at this stage.

The joy of fly fishing is that you never know everything and it is a wonderful voyage of discovery that never ends. However getting a sound start can make all the difference between having a successful journey of discovery or getting lost and going round and round in circles and becoming disheartened and giving up. This is especially true with children who may not always have the necessary patience and determination required. I have known several people turn up here in on the River Eden who have been fishing for many years and I have taken them out to show them the river and set them off to find out that they had no knowledge of how to approach a river. On showing them some rudimentary techniques they have commented "I always enjoy fishing because of the surroundings and wildlife but thanks you have explained and shown me why I hardly ever catch a fish" A shame that they did not consider spending a little money along time ago to avoid years of frustration!

Having invested in some tuition and got the basics of casting and what you are trying to achieve with it to try and catch a fish do enjoy the voyage of discovery. Some people become over reliant on tuition and stop thinking and questioning for themselves. Solving a problem for yourself is hugely satisfying and will provide some of the most memorable occasions in your fishing lifetime.
