Winter is the best time of year for catching big catfish. Most people completely ignore this time of year because its cold outside and the experts say that fishing is tough. This can be true for someone that doesn't know where to fish but for those in the know this time of year is the best time to be on the water. Here is how and why this time of year is so great.
During the time of year, its cold. Everything moves slow. But everything is also huddled together for warm. This means that catfish will be stacked in a hole by the thousands. Imagine catching one big fish after another. Sounds exciting to me. So where are these holes at? I'll give you three locations that you just can't lose with. The first is a deep hole. If you can find the deepest and biggest hole in your section, you will find the most fish in your area. Next you should be looking for intersections of creeks and rivers. They create holes that the fish in the smaller creeks and rivers will pull out to in winter time. The last place is a dam. Though is might not offer the deepest water, it has so much bait in the area that the catfish just won't leave. This is especially true for southern locations.
Now that we know where those catfish reside how to we catch them? Easy. You can take two methods. The first is simply drifting through prime areas. I believe that there will be so many catfish in an area that at least a few catfish will bite when you come through a great area. I use this as a great search tool so that I can find the best holes before settling into that area. My next method is called Bounding Down. Thank you to Steve Douglas for putting me on to this technique. This technique requires anchoring every twenty to forty yards and casting out. This allows you to slowly check a large stretch of river in a days time while catching inactive catfish. The technique is work but works great.
I would suggest that you fish with large bait since you will be catching large catfish most of the time. This is because the catfish's metabolism has lowered and they will have to feed less. Since the big catfish have a larger body, they must feed more in order to sustain their larger body. Plus it is winter and they don't want to spend any extra energy feeding. That means that they want the biggest meal possible in the shortest amount of time. Why not make it easy on them?
