Crappies are a fun fish to catch. Most places do not have daily limits for crappie so you can catch dozens and have a fish fry and nobody would mind. Crappie fishing in a small pond gets to be real fun. Personally, I like crappie fishing out on a boat but if you do not have that as an option or are looking for a quick fix at the neighborhood pond then crappie fishing in a small pond will be what you need to learn. Here are some basic rigs that really work well for catching crappie:

Flies

There is a lot of different lures that you can use to really make these fish bite. When you are fishing small areas of water you really want to use smaller lures are well. Next time you buy small crappie lures buy some flies from the fly fishing section of your local tackle shop. What a lot of crappie do in small ponds is feed off of insects. If you buy an Adams fly and attach it to a bobber you will see some crappie bite.

Spinnerbaits

Small crappie spinnerbaits work wonders when crappie fishing in a small pond. Use bright colors on bright days and dark colors on dark days. Really you only need two colors which are black and white. All the rest are just extra if you want more.

Soft Plastics

A small soft plastic worm that is maybe three inches long works well. Also if you have some a small minnow soft plastic also works well for crappie fishing on a small pond. Just fish them deeper and on a light rod so you can get a better feel for a bite.

Tube Jigs

Tube jigs are an amazing lure if the crappies are not biting what you are giving them. For an added touch use a small piece of alka seltzer to give a swimming look to your jig.

Live Bait

Crappies are known for their love for minnows. On a small pond attach the minnow to the hook through its lip. Allow it to swim on its own then set the hook when a crappie takes it. If you do not want to use minnows try using worms. Night crawlers are huge crappie bait and work really well to land some really nice size ones.

These are just a few great rigs to use when crappie fishing on a small pond. Above all else just have fun. The worst day of fishing is still better than the best day at work.
