When one thinks of hobbies and travel activities associated with New York, the most populated city in America, deep sea fishing probably doesn't come up too often. You may be surprised to learn, then, that Montauk, New York (located on Long Island) is known by many as the Sport Fishing Capital of the World.

While Long Island itself boasts of several hot fishing spots including the Hudson River, Sheepshead Bay and Fire Island Inlet, the Montauk region definitely outshines all others, with a higher number of difficult-to-catch fish in much higher numbers, including Marlin, Tuna, Bluefish, Striped Bass and Dolphin.

Due to excellently implemented conservation efforts, many fish are making a strong comeback-specifically the striped bass (also known as the rockfish). The best time to fish for striped bass in Montauk is from May to November.

The striped bass can be caught by a variety of methods including trolling and surfcasting. They take better to live bait including bloodworms, sandworms, clams and bunker. Recreational limits do apply to this particular breed since it is still technically endangered.

Bottom fishing (for species like bluefish and sea-bass) is usually done through the process of anchoring or trolling-although bluefish are not limited to the deep sea. Bluefish respond best to fresh, live bait, including shrimp, squid, ells and mackerel, however they have been known to also take artificial bait.

Deep sea fishing is an exciting experience that most people can't do just once. The catch living below the photic zone of the ocean are not only much larger and stranger than those closer to shore, but many of these creatures are so elusive that they are yet to be studied. Deep sea fish also tend to be less agile and a little slower than those closer to shore because they have a more minimal bone structure and jelly-like flesh.

Although deep sea fishing is definitely not a sport for the absolute beginner (since fish tend to be much larger and put up more of a fight than those closer to shore, it's possible for a beginner to lose his or her rod or even end up being pulled overboard), Montauk Bay provides a nice atmosphere for a family of experienced fishers to enjoy on vacation.

If you don't have your own boat, you can look up a professional captain who makes charter trips-ranging from a half day to almost a week at a time. Usually these captains will also supply the bait and tackle.
