Once the autumn signs become noticeable, the leaves are changing color and beginning to fall, and the evenings have become chill it is time to change your Bass-catching tactics. Shorter days mean lower water temperatures, and the fall movement of the water begins where the warm and cool water change places, the cooler water sinking and the warmer water rising to the surface, this lasts about 2 weeks. This is called the "fall turnover", and upsets the biting in the lake. But once it is over the biting gets back into top gear until the ice closes it all up and we all go on home to the warm hearth
It is after Labour Day that this generally takes place, and once it has finished, the Bass begin a feeding frenzy to fatten up for the lean winter months. This is good news for Bass fishermen for around the next 6 weeks or so. It is at around the time of the beginning of the change that the food Bass thrive on make their way to the shallows, and of course the Bass follow the food, already sensing the coming change in the season and knowing the need to fatten up and feed. Most of lake's fish will be heading for the shallows, all with the same thing in mind, so the Bass will be expecting to have a real feeding party
In the shallows the Bass find food fish such as bluegills, craws and frogs (migrating for their winter hibernation). This all sounds like such good news, but it isn't all grand...because it is now that the Bass are on the move more than ever and you will need to get around on the water quite a bit to find them, and then keep moving with them as they roam. At this time it is a good idea to use chunk and wind baits such as shallow cranks, spinner baits and traps. Use them a lot in the 1st month or so
Let me cover a few baits briefly, shallow and mid-depth crank baits will be most attractive to the Bass at this time of year, use long casts and get close to the reeds to trigger bites. Shallow baits imitate craw and bluegills well in the shallow water and generally get good bites. Traps and spinner baits are almost the same except that the traps are good in thicker weeds and shallower water while the shine of the traps will draw the fish better in more sparse weeds and slightly deeper water
Once the fall turnover begins killing the weeds, the fish all begin moving deeper again. Time to re-adjust and make a few changes of habit and tactics. Now you are facing Bass in schools not in singles or small groups, move to deep crank baits. Look to the deep green weeds where the oxygen is still best for the Bass and the small fish they are feeding on, a deeper-diving crank bait is indispensable at this time...and give it a good pull just as you feel the bait coming into contact with the weeds. The Bass love that...
And please, remember CPR, Catch-Photo-Release...The future of fishing relies on your sensible and sustainable use of our dwindling natural resources. We all want to look forward to catching again next season
It is a pleasure to pack your weekend camping gear and head far out of town to reach for big Bass, although of course we always hope that everybody else before us has left things as we would like to find them
