There are many different fishing rods available with various levels of quality. Each one has its good and bad qualities. In this article, I am going to show you how-to select and buy the best fishing rod for your hard earned money.
Step One: Determine the use:
The first step in determining what rod to buy is to determine what it will be used for. What I mean is "what kind of fish". If you will be fishing for trout then you don't need a 9' salt water casting rod or a 5' power tuna stick. Each species of fish have separate rod and tackle requirements to effectively catch that particular fish. You don't use a tuna rod to catch trout nor do you use a trout fly rod to catch a tuna. Nuff said.
Step Two: Determine how often you will use it.
In this second step, you must realistically determine how often you are going to use this fishing rod. If you are only going to use this rod once a year at the family picnic, then it makes no sense to spend $1,000 on the very best rod available! A better choice would be a moderately priced rod that has decent features for the money. Conversely, if you go out fishing weekly and need a rod that will stand up to the rigors of day-today fishing, then you will need a rod that can take that kind of use.
Step Three: Determine your budget
This is the most important of all the steps and I can tell you stories of folks who bought hundreds of dollars of equipment just to let it sit in their garage for years only to sell it for peanuts at a garage sale. This goes hand in hand with the previous step. If you only have $200.00 to spend then spend according to what you intend to use it for. It is far better to spend less than you really need than to over spend just to lose that investment in depreciation. There is a LOT of competition out there and people would rather buy new than used because they don't know the condition of the used equipment they are buying.
Step Four: Purchasing your equipment
With all the various stores out there, it can become confusing finding the right fishing equipment. Some stores carry a lot while others carry a little. Which stores can you trust? What about buying on line? Well, the simple answer is this: Visit many stores and talk to the salespeople. If you feel comfortable with what they are telling you, then great. If not, run for the door. The key here is what works best for you. Like the saying goes: Different strokes for different folks. I personally like to visit stores and then write down model numbers and then do a search on line to get the best price. Be advised though, the best prices may not be on line. Retailers have to compete with the Internet now, so they will be bending over backwards to cut you a deal!
Once you have done your homework and are satisfied with your discovery, then purchase you equipment and go fishing!
