Of all of the manners in which we can go fishing, to me none is more enjoyable than river fishing while wading. When I'm wading in a river fishing for trout or other river dwelling fish it's almost as if I feel like I'm in the presence of God. This is especially true when fishing in the uninhabited, remote rivers of Montana and Idaho. As a matter of fact, over the years I've figured out that this feeling is because in these situations Iam in the presence of God.

Obviously, these types of situations cannot be experienced (in many times of the year) without the help of fishing waders. In this article I'm going to outline the two best styles of waders available for the serious fisherman. These styles are both effective, and each has its good and bad points.

The final choice as to which is "the best" style of fishing waders depends on the type of water you wade fish most of the time, and ultimately your personal preference. Another important thing to remember about waders is that you get what you pay for. If you try to buy the cheapest pair of waders that you can find, they will ultimately perform like, well a cheap pair of waders. An extra fifty or a hundred bucks invested in a good pair of fishing waders will pay dividends for many years.

Neoprene Fishing Waders - These are probably the best known style of fishing wader available today. Neoprene waders are extremely durable and also extremely effective. The downside of these fishing waders is their weight and non-breath ability. These waders can be quite hot when the weather is hot, mainly because of the fact that they don't "breath". This unfortunate fact is great when the weather is cool to cold, as neoprene waders are quite warm. For example, if you are a steelhead angler, neoprene waders may be your best friend.
Breathable Fishing Waders - Breathable fishing waders are very lightweight and quite comfortable. Wearing these waders is much like wearing a pair of dress pants. When it comes to fishing waders breathable waders are my personal favorite. Although these waders can be cold if you are fishing in very cold water, you can layer underneath them to help remedy this problem. This style of wader is less durable than their neoprene cousins, but is still a great choice. If you do most of your wade fishing in the late spring, summer, and early fall, breathable fishing waders will be the choice for you. If you like to fish for trout or smallmouth in rivers during the warmer months, this style may be your best friend.

These styles are your best bet for fishing in rivers and streams. There are also rubber waders available, but these aren't worth the small amount of money the will end up costing you. Pick one of the two styles of fishing waders above and you'll be in great shape. In general you should be able to find a good pair of either style for $125-$225 dollars, and a great pair for $225-$400. As long as you stick to these simple rules, and purchase within these price ranges you'll be happy with your waders, no matter which style you choose.
