If there is one thing on this planet that I love to do more than anything else it's to catch trout on ultralight tackle and twenty years ago when I was taught how to catch trout in this manner, I was instantly hooked. While catching trout while using ultralight tackle was a ton of fun, within a year or two I wanted to graduate from just catching trout to catching BIG trout as well, so I started honing my skills and low and behold started not only catching trout, but also catching large trout.

What I learned over the 10 plus years that it took for me to be able to consistently catch big trout on ultralight tackle was that there were certain things that could be done to "tip the odds" into my favor when I headed out onto the water. Below I will outline some of these secrets for catching large trout so that you can add them to your trout fishing repertoire and begin catching big trout consistently as well.

The first secret to keep in mind is to pay special attention every time that you tie a knot and here's why. Because you never know when a big trout is going to bite and when one does your knots had better be on point as they say. For many years I had large trout break off due to faulty knots until I figured out what the problem was, so the first secret to catching big trout is to be extremely mindful with every fishing knot that you tie.

Next is a term that any fisherman worth his or her salt should be very familiar with and that term is patience. Having patience is the second secret to catching big trout. Trout that are big got that way for a reason and that reason is not for being stupid. This means that big trout have not only seen many different methods and types of 'fishing' before, they have also more than likely been fooled by fishermen and gotten caught and been released on more than one occasion. This fact is one of the biggest reasons that catching bigger trout is such a challenge and is why patience is so important.

Patience not only refers to the amount of time that you will probably have to spend on the water (sometimes in the same area or "hole"), but also being patient when a big trout is hooked. Large trout have all kinds of "tricks up their sleeves" when they are battling an angler and being patient during the fight is just as important as it is before a big trout is actually hooked. For example, the fight between me and my most recent 23 inch rainbow trout lasted a little over an hour before I had my big trout in my hands. If I had not been patient during the fight, the trout would have never been landed.

The last secret that I have for catching big trout on ultralight tackle is to always make sure that your fishing line is as "fresh" as possible. What do I mean by this? When fishing line (especially monofilament fishing line) get's used for an extended period of time it loses much of it's strength and flexibility, and when you hook a big trout you don't want your fishing line to be weak in any way. This is why during the trout fishing season you should change your fishing line at least every three months so that your line is always as "fresh" as possible. Add these simple secrets to your arsenal and you will be catching bigger trout on ultralight tackle sooner rather than later.
