There is one fishing bait that is more readily available and well known than any other and that fishing bait is night crawlers. Nightcrawlers are the most well known live fishing bait on the planet earth, so much so that in many areas of the United States this variety of live worms are sold in bait shops, tackle stores, and even convenience stores. There is no doubt that fishing with nightcrawlers is a strategy that many anglers opt for when heading out to do a little fishing.

I have been using this particular fishing bait for more than two decades and there is little doubt that fishing with nightcrawlers is my "go to" strategy when fishing about 90% of the time. Over the years I have learned that many people think that fishing with nightcrawlers is as simple as just hooking the worm onto a hook and throwing it into the water. While doing this will catch a fish or two, it is by no means the best way to go about fishing with worms of any kind.

This fact is especially true when it comes to larger, more experienced fish. If you want to be as effective as you can when fishing with any live fishing worm, the first tip is to rig that live worm in the most natural way possible. What does this mean? It means to rig your worm in such a way that it appears to the fish that you are attempting to catch the way that it would appear in nature. By doing this the night crawler looks "natural" and will therefore be bit more often.

The next tip is to always make sure that your worms are alive, as a matter of fact they need to be as lively as possible. This fact is true with all live worms and is especially true when fishing with nightcrawlers, whether you are using the entire worm or have pinched the night crawler in half to make it fit onto your rig better. Dead or dying worms will get next to no bites from wary fish.

The final tip is to downsize your fishing hooks. Many anglers tend to use fishing hooks that are entirely too large when fishing with nightcrawlers, thus the reason they hook the worm over and over again to make it fit onto and conceal the fishing hook. Smaller hooks must be employed (size 6 to 12) to catch catch fishing consistently when using nightcrawlers as bait. Downsize your hooks and you will receive more bites, it's as simple as that. Keep these simple tips in mind the next time that you head out fishing and intend to use live fishing worms as bait. The tips have been serving me well for many years and I know they will do the same for you.
